Pets at the Friday Market

Download SCCA Friday Market Pets Policy

We only allow dogs (and other animals) outdoors at the Friday Market.
We do allow certified service dogs indoors and outdoors at the Market.

Our food vendors are licensed by the BC Government.

By entering the indoor market with a non-certified service animal, pet owners are risking the livelihood of our local vendors, who depend on the Friday Market for their income.

Food Premises Regulation
Guide Dog & Service Dog Act

If you’re bringing your pet to the outdoor area of the Market, please remember the following rules:

  • Keep your dog on a short leash at all times. Long leashes are a safety hazard.
  • Keep dogs out of the stall area.
  • Stay away from food samples, customer bags, and table surfaces.
  • Watch your dog at all times. (You must keep your dog under control or we will ask you to leave the Market.)
  • Keep your pet hydrated and clean up after them.
  • Be respectful of everyone wishing to enjoy the Market. (Not all customers are dog lovers)

Why dogs are allowed at the outdoor Market

Like their owners, dogs enjoy the social opportunity the Market provides. Being in a public area, we do not have the ability to enforce a “No-Dog” policy.

Other reasons for allowing pets at the outdoor area of the Market include:

  • The Strathcona Regional District has no regulation that prevents dogs from visiting the outdoor market
  • We are not aware of any regulation that requires us to enforce a “No-Dog” policy
  • We provide information and rules to dog owners about behaviour and we will take action to remove poorly behaved animals.

Why only Certified Guide or Service Dogs are allowed at the indoor Market

Under our provincial legislation certified service dogs have the legal right to go anywhere their handler can go. They’re the equivalent of any other accessibility aid, like a wheelchair or a white cane.

Uncertified support animals in Canada don’t have any access rights to public spaces that service dogs do. This is largely because there’s no guarantee they’ve been trained to behave themselves in public.

“service dog” means a dog that (a) is trained to perform specific tasks to assist a person with a disability, and (b) is certified as a service dog.
BC Guide Dog & Service Dog Act

An operator of food premises must not permit live animals to be on the premises. An operator of food premises may permit a guide dog or a service dog, as defined in the Guide Dog and Service Dog Act,
BC Government Public Health Act – Food Premises Regulation

SCCA Board Minutes 8-Nov-2022

Thrift Store

The board unanimously voted to continue investing in the Thrift Store. A proposal to convert the space to a rental space (Literacy Centre) was rejected. We feel the Thrift Store is a one of kind community asset.
If you love the Thrift Store we need volunteers!

Cortes Island Seniors Society & Mansons Hall

Members from CISS met with Board Chair, Bryan McKinnon, and the SCCA’s new Bookkeeper, Melissa Lenos (King Business Solutions). The discussion focused on the history of CISS and Mansons Hall, how the two organizations can work closer together next year, negotiating our annual fees, and preparing for the upcoming General Meeting to approve the 2023 SRD Core Funding Budget.

Construction Coordinator Manson’s Hall Renovations

New Concept for Manson's Hall Entry with Post Office in New Room. See articles below for details.
The Southern Cortes Community Association is seeking a construction coordinator for renovations at Manson’s Hall. The SCCA has been successful in applications for grants to fund improvements to the main entryway and hall bathrooms, structural repairs and interior refinishing in the upstairs rooms, playschool, thrift store and hall office, the construction of a new covered deck for the playschool, and renovation of the present post office room after the new post office opens.

The coordinator will need to work with the SCCA board and hall staff to plan and schedule work so the hall can remain as functional as possible during construction, to hire crew and provide onsite supervision, and to work with SCCA accounting staff to manage payroll and purchases to meet the reporting requirements of the grants. If you are interested, please submit a letter to SCCA Board of Directors, Box 222, Manson’s Landing, B.C., V0P1K0, or drop it off at the hall office, including your qualifications and experience. Letters will be accepted through Monday, April 29

Thank you, Emcon!

The Southern Cortes Community Association greatly appreciates the support of Emcon Services management and Cortes crew in our current project to improve the access to Manson’s Landing Community Hall. In conjunction with the soon-to-open new office for Canada Post, we are revamping the entryway with an enlarged pedestrian patio and improved parking. Emcon has generously agreed to help by donating quality crushed gravel to provide a base for patio pavers and a better drained surface for parking on the Beasley Road side of the hall. The SCCA also wishes to commend Emcon’s Cortes crew for the work they have done to improve pedestrian safety in the neighbourhood by installing underground drainage where there were ditches.  Emcon’s willingness to partner with community institutions and enterprises to benefit the whole island is gratifying. Give the guys a thankful wave when you see them on the road.
