Cemetery
The Southern Cortes Community Association owns the parcel and holds the interment license for the cemetery at the end of Cemetery Road, about 200m south of our main facility down Sutil Point Road.
This picturesque and peaceful site has been a place of final rest of Cortesians for more than 150 years. The Garden Section is fully fenced and allows for a variety of burial choices, headstones and markers, and marks of remembrance such as sculpture and garden plants.
Adjacent to this area and to the north is the Forest Section which allows for natural burials only, and all additions or items of remembrance must be on natural materials such as stone, shell, and plant matter. We ask that in this area only native plants are used, and that no processed materials such as ceramics or cement be used. Natural or chemical-free interment is permitted in all areas of our cemetery.
The SCCA is proud to collaborate in the stewardship and management of the cemetery with the Death Caring Collective, a highly lauded organisation that supports community before, during and after death of loved ones. For more information about the DCC visit their web page at islanddeathcare.ca. For further information about our cemetery, including our cemetery bylaws, burial fees, and permitting, please contact cora@mansonshall.org, or call 250 935 0015.
The Village Commons
The land beside Mansons Hall was transferred from the Cortes Community Economic Development Association (CCEDA) to the Cortes Island Community Foundation (CICF), who is now in charge of developing it. The CICF is creating beautiful permanent structures and spaces for the entire community to enjoy. The SCCA is collaborating with CICF in the operation of some of these spaces.
THE NOOK – A co-working and meeting space that is intended for the island’s nonprofits and community organizations, and available to rent through CICF. MORE
